Engineering protection of territories: landslide prevention and bank protection, embankments, protection against flooding and rising groundwater, drainage
On the Black Sea coast, along the shores of the estuaries, the Danube and the Dniester, and on slopes within city limits, water and soil constantly put houses, roads and utilities to the test. We design measures that stop landslides, hold the shoreline in place and divert excess water away from buildings.
Landslides and groundwater flooding rarely happen overnight. They build up over years through rising groundwater, leaking networks and wave erosion of the bank. That is why we start with the causes — surveys, analysis of the groundwater regime and slope stability — and only then choose the structure: a retaining wall, rock revetment, protective dike or drainage system.
Eliminating groundwater flooding in settlements, flood control, landslide prevention and bank protection measures are among the institute’s key tasks in ensuring the region’s environmental safety. We design protection to work for decades, with predictable maintenance costs.
What we design
- Landslide prevention: retaining structures, slope grading and stabilization
- Protection of sea, estuary and river banks
- Embankments that also protect the shoreline
- Protective dikes and levees against flooding
- Protection of settlements against rising groundwater
- Horizontal and vertical drainage
- Surface and stormwater runoff drainage
- Slope stability and wave impact calculations
- Recommendations for monitoring the condition of protective structures
Work stages
Stage 1. Site inspection
We visit the site, record signs of landslides, erosion or groundwater flooding, and study the available materials and history of the problem.
Stage 2. Surveys and calculations
We carry out engineering-geological and hydrogeological surveys and calculate slope stability, water levels and loads on structures.
Stage 3. Options
We propose several protection options with cost and effectiveness estimates and choose the best one together with you.
Stage 4. Design and expert review
We develop the design and cost estimate documentation and support it through expert review.
Stage 5. Designer’s supervision
We check that the works comply with the design — which is especially important for protective structures.
